Dietmar Hamann Questions Leroy Sané’s Future After Galatasaray Struggles
Former Bayern Munich midfielder and television pundit Dietmar Hamann believes the German champions may have avoided a costly mistake when a proposed contract extension for Leroy Sané collapsed in spring 2025. In Hamann’s view, the winger’s recent performances suggest Bayern were fortunate not to commit to a longer deal—and Galatasaray’s experience has done little to change his assessment.
Speaking to Sky Austria, Hamann delivered a blunt verdict on Sané’s contribution. “He could have stayed in Munich, but I think Bayern were very lucky to avoid this situation,” he said. “We’ve seen over the past 18 months that he is no longer able to help teams.” His comments add fresh scrutiny to the 30-year-old’s form, future and role at one of Turkey’s most ambitious clubs.
How Sané’s Bayern Contract Talks Fell Apart
Bayern and Sané appeared close to extending their partnership while his contract was approaching its expiry. The club and player had reportedly reached an agreement, but the situation changed after Sané switched agents and sought to reopen negotiations. The talks ultimately failed, and the winger left Munich on a free transfer to join Galatasaray.
At the time, the move offered Sané a new challenge and Galatasaray a high-profile addition with extensive experience in the Bundesliga, the Premier League and European competition. The Istanbul club has regularly pursued established international players to strengthen its squad and compete for domestic honours. But a big-name signing does not guarantee an immediate fit: playing time, tactical responsibilities and consistency all shape whether a transfer succeeds.
So far, Sané has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under head coach Okan Buruk. His appearances have often been limited, and he has not consistently produced the decisive goals or assists expected from an attacking player of his reputation. That gap between expectation and output has become central to the debate over whether the move has worked for either side.
Limited Impact Raises Questions at Galatasaray
Sané’s recent involvement in the Champions League illustrated his current standing. Against VfB Stuttgart, he entered the match midway through the second half but was unable to make a significant impact. A substitute appearance in a high-profile fixture is not, on its own, proof of a player’s decline. However, when limited minutes become a pattern, they can make it harder to build rhythm, confidence and a clear place in the team.
Hamann also pointed to the response of Galatasaray supporters, questioning how satisfied fans could be with the return from a Germany international who arrived with considerable expectations. He suggested that some supporters might prefer Sané to move on “sooner rather than later,” while acknowledging that the player’s own intentions remain unclear.
That reaction reflects a familiar challenge for elite clubs: supporters often judge expensive or high-profile signings by visible contributions, especially goals, assists and standout performances in major matches. Yet evaluating a winger requires more than counting goal involvements. Pressing, ball progression, defensive work and the ability to create space can also matter. Even so, those contributions are more difficult to appreciate when a player is not regularly on the pitch.
Statistics and an Off-Field Flashpoint
In the 2026/27 campaign, Sané has made 14 competitive appearances but has completed a full match only once, according to the figures cited in the report. He has yet to record a goal contribution. Those numbers provide a snapshot of a difficult season, though they should be considered alongside his minutes and role rather than treated as a complete measure of his ability.
Sané also drew attention away from football at the weekend during Galatasaray’s 4-0 league victory over Konyaspor. While on the sidelines, he snapped at a cameraman, telling him to “Fuck off with the camera.” The incident added to the public conversation around his time in Istanbul, although it does not explain his selection or performance issues on the pitch.
For a player who has previously been valued for explosive pace, direct dribbling and the ability to change a match in a moment, the central question is whether he can regain a consistent role. Regular minutes could give him the opportunity to rebuild form, but limited starts make that task more difficult. Galatasaray, meanwhile, must weigh his experience and reputation against the need for reliable contributions from its attacking options.
Germany Omission and Contract Situation
Sané remains under contract with Galatasaray until 2028 and is reported to earn a net salary of around €9 million per year, making him one of the club’s highest-paid players. That long-term commitment gives both sides time to find a solution, but it also raises the stakes if his role remains limited. A high salary can become a major consideration when a club reviews its squad planning, particularly if a player is not regularly influencing results.
The winger has also recently been left out of Germany’s national team by new head coach Jürgen Klopp. An international omission is not necessarily permanent, but it underlines the competition for places and the importance of strong club form. For Sané, a return to the national setup would likely depend on convincing performances, sustained playing time and a clear contribution at Galatasaray.
What Could Happen Next?
Hamann is sceptical that Sané has a long-term future in European football and considers a move to the United States or Saudi Arabia more likely. Such destinations can offer experienced players a different sporting environment, substantial contracts and a prominent role. However, no transfer decision has been confirmed, and Sané’s contract through 2028 means any departure would depend on negotiations between the player and Galatasaray.
For now, the most important test is likely to be what happens on the pitch. If Sané earns more starts and begins producing goals, assists or influential performances, the narrative could change quickly. If his minutes remain scarce, speculation about a transfer will intensify. Any football prediction about his next move should therefore be treated cautiously: his contract, salary, club plans and personal ambitions will all shape the outcome.
Hamann’s comments have reopened the debate over whether Bayern were right to let Sané leave without a new deal. Galatasaray’s current return has not yet matched the expectations attached to his arrival, but the season is still a chance for the winger to respond. Whether he can turn limited opportunities into a sustained revival may determine not only his future in Istanbul, but also his prospects across European football.
