Ashutosh Sharma Emerges as Potential IPL Trade Target Ahead of Retention Deadline
With the November 17 deadline for player retentions and releases approaching, the IPL trade market is beginning to gather momentum. One name drawing fresh attention is Delhi Capitals batter Ashutosh Sharma, whose ability to finish close matches could make him a valuable target for a franchise seeking more firepower in the lower middle order.
Discussions around a possible deal are still at an early stage. The identity of the interested team—and the player who could move in the opposite direction—has not been confirmed. However, reports suggest the proposed exchange may involve a fast bowler, reflecting the different squad needs of the teams involved. For fans following every IPL prediction and roster development, Ashutosh’s situation is one to watch as the deadline gets closer.
Why Ashutosh’s finishing ability is attracting interest
Ashutosh, a 28-year-old right-handed batter, has built a reputation for producing late-innings runs under pressure. He previously represented Punjab Kings before joining Delhi Capitals, and his performances for both sides have highlighted his potential as a finisher. In a format where a handful of deliveries can decide a result, teams increasingly value batters who can accelerate quickly without losing their composure.
His latest IPL campaign offered a glimpse of that impact. Ashutosh scored 171 runs across eight matches last season, striking at more than 180. While the sample size was limited, the scoring rate underlines why franchises may view him as a specialist option for the closing overs. A reliable finisher can give a team greater flexibility: top-order batters can build an innings while the middle and lower order retain the power to chase a demanding target or lift a total late in the game.
That skill set could be particularly appealing to teams reassessing their batting combinations. A trade would not automatically guarantee Ashutosh a regular role, but it could offer him a clearer pathway to consistent opportunities if the receiving franchise has a specific need at No. 6 or No. 7.
Gujarat Titans among the possible suitors
Gujarat Titans are understood to have shown interest in Ashutosh. The Shubman Gill-led side reportedly approached Delhi Capitals a couple of months ago, although Delhi did not provide an immediate response. With a new management group and head coach now in place, the Capitals could take another look at the proposal as they review their squad before the retention deadline.
Gujarat’s interest would make sense if the franchise is looking to strengthen its finishing options. The Titans are believed to be considering a release of Shahrukh Khan, which could create room for a different middle-order profile. Ashutosh’s ability to score rapidly late in an innings may offer the kind of role-specific option the team wants, though any final decision will depend on the balance of the squad and the value attached to the players involved.
Gujarat also have considerable pace resources, a factor that could make a batter-for-bowler exchange possible. Their fast-bowling group includes Arshad Khan, Gurnoor Brar, Kulwant Khejroliya, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Ishant Sharma. Having several options does not necessarily mean the Titans will trade a quick, but it gives them room to consider whether one part of the squad can be adjusted to address another.
There has reportedly been previous trade activity involving Gujarat and a finisher. A few months ago, the Titans are understood to have approached another franchise about a possible exchange involving fast bowler Ashok Sharma. That offer was not accepted. Ashok has played two T20 Internationals for India, both in July this year, but has not been in action since. The earlier approach suggests Gujarat have been exploring ways to reshape their finishing options, although it does not confirm that a new deal is imminent.
Lucknow Super Giants also fit the profile
Lucknow Super Giants have also been mentioned as a possible destination. The franchise is reportedly looking to strengthen and consolidate its batting, and a proven power-hitting option could help provide greater depth. As with Gujarat, though, there is no confirmation that LSG have made a formal offer for Ashutosh.
Lucknow possess a strong collection of fast bowlers, including Prince Yadav, Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan, Anrich Nortje, Mayank Yadav, Akash Singh and Arjun Tendulkar. That depth could make a pace-bowling asset part of a potential trade discussion, but squad lists alone cannot establish which player might be available. A franchise must also consider fitness, workload, role suitability and the likely availability of its overseas stars before agreeing to a swap.
Delhi’s own need for pace could shape negotiations
Delhi Capitals may be willing to listen to offers, but the club also has a clear reason to protect its bowling resources. The franchise recently traded T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad and is reportedly uncertain whether Mitchell Starc will be available for the full season. If those concerns remain, Delhi could be reluctant to part with a fast bowler unless the return strengthens another area without leaving the attack short.
This creates a balancing act for the Capitals. Ashutosh has a potentially valuable role as a finisher, but the team must weigh that contribution against its need for reliable pace options. Any trade would need to address both sides of the equation: the player arriving should fill a genuine gap, while the player leaving should not create a larger problem elsewhere.
Domestic form adds another layer
Ashutosh is currently representing Gujarat in domestic cricket after switching from Madhya Pradesh earlier this year. His domestic performances may give interested teams additional information about his current form and role, although IPL decisions typically consider a wider set of factors, including recent franchise performances, squad composition and auction value.
For now, the potential move remains unconfirmed, and Delhi officials were not immediately available for comment. The coming days could bring greater clarity as franchises settle their retention plans and assess whether a trade offers better value than entering the auction with the same roster.
Any prediction about Ashutosh’s next team should therefore be treated cautiously. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants appear to fit the broad profile of clubs seeking batting reinforcement, while Delhi’s pace requirements could influence the terms of a deal. Until the franchises confirm a move, Ashutosh remains a player to monitor—not a completed trade—as the IPL’s pre-deadline negotiations continue.
