Bayern Munich Goalkeeper Debate Intensifies as Hamann Urges Urbig Trial
Bayern Munich’s plans for the future in goal are back in the spotlight after former midfielder and television pundit Dietmar Hamann called on the club to give Jonas Urbig a sustained opportunity. The debate comes as Manuel Neuer continues to miss matches intermittently and sporting director Max Eberl weighs up Bayern’s options ahead of the winter transfer window.
Hamann’s proposal is not simply to rotate the goalkeepers when injuries require it. He believes Bayern should set a clear period in which Urbig plays regularly, regardless of whether Neuer is available. The idea would give the young goalkeeper a meaningful test while allowing the club to assess its long-term succession plan.
Hamann wants Bayern to plan beyond Neuer
Speaking on Sky90, Hamann acknowledged that Neuer remains Bayern’s first-choice goalkeeper, but questioned whether the club can continue relying on a player who is increasingly unavailable for individual fixtures. He described the situation as an “awkward balancing act,” with Neuer missing one match and then another.
Hamann also cautioned against assuming that Urbig would automatically be ready to take over permanently. Playing a handful of games, he argued, is very different from carrying the responsibility of being Bayern’s regular number one. His suggested solution is a defined trial: Urbig would start consistently through to the winter break, whether Neuer is fit or not.
That approach could provide a clearer picture of Urbig’s readiness under pressure. A run of matches would allow Bayern to assess not only his shot-stopping but also his command of the penalty area, distribution, communication with the defence and ability to recover after mistakes. Those qualities matter particularly at a club where opponents often defend deep and force the goalkeeper to contribute to the build-up.
Hamann also argued that Bayern must avoid letting past achievements dictate present-day selection decisions. Neuer has been central to the club’s success for many years, but Hamann believes the team’s sporting needs should come first. His point is that Bayern will continue beyond the end of Neuer’s career and should prepare for that transition before it becomes unavoidable.
Whether Bayern’s coaching staff agree remains to be seen. A goalkeeper change can influence the entire defensive structure, and Neuer’s experience and leadership still carry significant value. However, Urbig’s development makes the question increasingly relevant: should Bayern prioritise continuity with a proven veteran, or use the current season to test a possible successor?
Eberl: Bayern are not planning a rushed winter signing
The goalkeeping discussion is unfolding alongside wider questions about Bayern’s squad depth. The club has been dealing with absences among several attacking players, including Ismael Saibari, Serge Gnabry, Luis Díaz and Jamal Musiala. Even so, Eberl has indicated that Bayern are not currently preparing an urgent move in the January transfer market.
Asked about potential winter reinforcements before the Champions League meeting with Atlético Madrid, Eberl said there were no immediate plans to sign anyone. He stressed that the club is satisfied with the squad it has assembled, while making clear that Bayern will continue to monitor developments rather than rule out every possibility.
The expected returns of Díaz and Musiala are an important part of that thinking. Eberl said Bayern hope both players will be back in the coming weeks and fully available again from January. If those timelines hold, the club could regain two influential attacking options without needing to spend during the winter window.
Still, Bayern’s position is not a guarantee that the transfer market will remain quiet. Injuries can change quickly, and the club will need to consider the length of each player’s absence, the demands of the Bundesliga and Champions League, and whether existing squad members can cover multiple roles. Eberl’s comments suggest a cautious strategy: assess the situation closely, but avoid making a signing simply because injuries have created short-term pressure.
For supporters, that leaves room for speculation but no clear indication of an incoming player. Bayern appear to be prioritising recovery and internal depth for now, with any winter decision likely to depend on how the squad looks as the January window approaches.
Kane, Olise and Upamecano nominated for FIFPRO World 11
Bayern also have three players in contention for the 2026 FIFPRO World 11: Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano. The shortlist is notable because the final team is selected by professional footballers, who vote for the players they consider to have delivered the strongest performances over the previous year.
Kane faces a crowded field among the forwards, with high-profile names including Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal. His nomination reflects his standing as one of the most prominent attacking players in world football, although competition for a place in the final team is intense.
Upamecano has a similarly difficult challenge in defence. The France international is competing with established names such as Virgil van Dijk, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães, Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes. Olise’s inclusion adds another Bayern representative to a list that recognises performances across clubs and national teams.
The nominations provide a positive note amid Bayern’s injury concerns and selection questions. They also underline the club’s continued presence among the leading sides in European football, even as its staff manage a demanding run of fixtures and plan for the next stages of the season.
Bayern Munich’s upcoming fixtures
Bayern’s schedule offers little time to settle the debate. The club is set to face Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, 3 November, before travelling to play Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga on Saturday, 7 November. Later in the month, Bayern host 1. FC Köln on Friday, 20 November, and then meet OSC Lille in Europe on Wednesday, 25 November.
Those matches could shape the conversation around squad management, particularly if attacking players remain unavailable or Neuer’s fitness continues to fluctuate. For Urbig, any opportunity to start would offer a valuable chance to demonstrate his readiness. For Bayern, the central prediction is that decisions about the goalkeeper position and winter recruitment will depend less on speculation than on performance, fitness and the club’s assessment of its long-term needs.
